A sudden Tendency to Faint During Pregnancy

Suddenly something slips from the hand or stumbles unconsciously—such strange events happen to many pregnant women. Although few in the beginning, such problems can cause suffering for many in the latter part of pregnancy, especially in the last trimester. These problems can be prevented by following some simple steps.

Causes of nausea during pregnancy

During pregnancy, you experience many physical and emotional changes. Sometimes these changes cause a feeling of awkwardness or clumsiness. Some of the changes are:

  • Excess weight: Excess pregnancy weight can be tiring for you. During this time, it may be difficult for you to maintain your body balance as your breasts and stomach grow in size. Due to the size of the abdomen, in many cases, the leg can be seen while walking. As a result, the risk of inadvertent accidents may increase.
  • Physical changes: Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, the ligaments connecting one bone to another loosen, and some changes occur in the joints of the bones. Apart from this, during this time, water accumulates in the body, and the hands and feet can swell. Due to these reasons, it can be difficult to maintain the balance of the body.
  • Forgetfulness: Forgetfulness is a common symptom during pregnancy. Mothers-to-be are also often confused by not being able to remember where things are.
  • Vision changes: Sometimes changes in the vision of the eyes during pregnancy can also cause you to fall inadvertently.
Dizziness: Dizziness is a common symptom during pregnancy. Sometimes during pregnancy, there is a possibility of losing balance due to dizziness.

In addition to these, the quality of life and other diseases also depend on this abnormal feeling of pregnancy. A sedentary lifestyle, excessive anxiety, gestational diabetes, and excessive nausea—also increase the rate of nausea and vomiting.

What to do to prevent the problem

There are so many reasons for a sudden loss of balance during pregnancy that there is nothing to panic about. Many unwanted accidents can be avoided if you follow some home remedies carefully.

1. Do daily activities slowly

Try to go about your daily activities with the understanding that pregnancy has changed you. While walking, check if there are any wet, slippery, or high places on the way. If there is something in hand, take care of it. Walking in haste increases the chance of falling. Therefore, try to move slowly by seeing and understanding.

2. Choose light exercise suitable for pregnancy

Physical exercise can play an important role in preventing falls during pregnancy. Light exercise suitable for pregnancy strengthens muscles and also helps with balance. Walking, running, jogging, or swimming—such exercises can be done during this time.

3. Use a waist belt suitable for pregnancy

Using a maternity support belt is an effective way to maintain balance. It helps reduce the risk of miscarriage. It can be found in any pharmacy or supermarket.

4. Avoid risky activities

Any hazardous work increases the chance of an accident. Therefore, avoid doing such work during pregnancy. For example: climbing the ladder; doing some work on the chair. There is a possibility of falling while doing any such work. For this reason, if such work is required, ask the family or a close person to do it.

5. Be extra careful in risky situations

In situations where there is a possibility of danger, exercise extra caution. For example, always walk on the railing when going up or down stairs; don’t walk on dark or dimly lit streets.

Even if you are used to extra exercise and sports before, reduce risky sports during pregnancy. Eg., badminton, jogging at high altitudes, horseback riding, and gymnastics—such sports are more likely to cause accidents.

6. Choose comfortable shoes

Many women may like to wear heels. But avoid wearing heels or shoes that can slip during pregnancy. These make mobility difficult as well as increase the chances of falling. Instead, choose shoes that you feel comfortable walking in.

7. Get enough rest

Try to get enough sleep at night and rest as needed during the day to reduce fatigue during pregnancy. This will help to reduce the feeling of nausea created by fatigue.

8. Do ankle exercises

A simple exercise can be done if ankle swelling is a problem. It helps reduce ankle swelling. For exercise regimens, read our article on ankle exercises.

9. Consult a doctor for treatment of possible diseases

Consult a doctor if you feel dizzy due to ‘Carpal Tunnel Syndrome’ or any other condition. The doctor can prevent any untoward accident by giving proper advice according to the disease.

When should you go to the doctor?

Nausea is a common symptom during pregnancy. These symptoms alone are usually nothing to worry about. But if certain symptoms appear along with the disorder, it may be due to some other disease. Some of the symptoms are:

  • Severe headache
  • Having trouble seeing in the eyes. For example, blurred vision or seeing flashes of light in front of the eyes
  • Vomiting
  • Sharp pain just below the rib cage
  • Sudden swelling of different parts of the body (e.g., feet, ankles, face, and hands).

These can be signs of pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy emergency. Therefore, if any such symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately.
