Surgeons remove a herniated or degenerative disc in the neck. Surgeons perform this surgery when physiotherapy or drugs fail to alleviate neck pain.

Why Do

Cervical Spine Surgery Types, Degeneration or erosion over the vertebrae causes the disc to thin and dry out. This causes the spine to become compressed, numb, and weak. Spinal nerves become swollen and painful. Healthy discs act as a flexible cushion between bones, helping our neck to bend and rotate.

Discectomy literally means ‘cutting the disc’. It involves removing one disc (single level) or more (multilevel), depending on the type of disc affected.

After the disc is removed, the space between the bony vertebrae is empty. A spacer bone graft is inserted to fill the disc space to prevent the vertebrae from collapsing and rubbing together. Bone grafts and vertebrae are fixed in place with metal plates and screws. After surgery, new bone cells grow around the graft. After three to six months the bone graft fuses with the two vertebrae to form a solid bone.

Before surgery

Preoperative medical history, allergies, medications and vitamins, bleeding history, reactions to anesthesia, and previous surgeries should be reported. Presurgical tests, such as blood tests, electrocardiograms, and chest X-rays, should be done. Patients should stop taking all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, Advil, etc.) and blood thinners seven days before surgery. Avoid nicotine use and alcohol consumption one week before and two weeks after surgery to prevent bleeding and healing problems. Do not eat after midnight before surgery.

After surgery

Cervical Spine Surgery Types, Avoid bending or twisting the neck. Do not lift anything heavier than five pounds. Do not lean over. Avoid smoking and alcohol. Do not drive until the follow-up visit. Take pain medication as prescribed by your doctor. Wear the provided brace at all times except when sleeping, showering, or icing. Apply an ice pack three to four times daily to reduce pain and swelling. Walk for 5 to 10 minutes every three to four hours. Gradually increase walking as much as possible. Make a follow-up appointment with your doctor two weeks after surgery.

Cervical Spine Surgery Types:

To sum up, reviewing the many kinds of cervical spine surgery highlights how intricate and exacting repairing spinal problems may be. Every operation, including artificial disc replacement and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, is intended to relieve a particular ailment. Surgery is an extremely personal choice that must be carefully considered, taking into account the patient’s particular situation as well as the knowledge provided by healthcare specialists. A successful recovery depends on adopting a thorough strategy for post-surgery care and rehabilitation. People can approach cervical spine surgery with confidence by being adequately informed and actively involved in the decision-making process, which maximizes their chances of better spinal health and happiness in general.
