Many of us make fun of headaches as a very common problem. But even a minor headache can spell doom. The discussion about what kind of pain is dangerous is the fifth episode of the SKF special program ‘Matha ni Mathabyatha’ organized on the occasion of ‘Migraine and Headache Awareness Week’.
The theme of this episode is ‘When Headaches Cause Dangerous Diseases’. Associate Professor of Neurology Department of the National Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital was the guest of the event. Abu Naim, Dr., conducted the episode. Sharabanya Tawhida. The program was broadcast live on September 10 from Prothom Alo’s Facebook page, YouTube channel, and SKF’s Facebook page.
95 to 97 percent of headaches are primary headaches. That is, it happens without any reason, and there is nothing to be afraid of. But in 3 to 5 percent of cases, headaches can be a symptom of a serious disease.
In the beginning, it was known that 95 to 97 percent of headaches were primary headaches. That is, it happens without any reason, and there is nothing to be afraid of. But in 3 to 5 percent of cases, headaches can be a symptom of a serious disease.
There are certain headache patterns or symptoms that help doctors decide whether a patient needs further testing.
These symptoms are called ‘red flag signs’ in medical terms. such as a sudden, severe headache like a thunderclap, neck pain with pain or neck stiffness, frequent vomiting or nausea, convulsions, blurred vision, fainting or gradual paralysis of one side of the body, acting as if mentally unbalanced, etc.
Apart from this, a new headache of a person in his fifties, physical exertion or exercise, increased pain after walking or even sneezing, a headache of a patient with high blood pressure, a sudden headache of a patient with a disease, a headache of a person with a head injury, and immunosuppressive drugs, i.e., drugs that prevent disease in the human body, Decreases in potency and headaches in patients taking such drugs—they must seek medical attention in these cases.
In cases of such symptoms, doctors do a physical examination after knowing the patient’s information and disease history. First, the patient is subjected to routine tests. Such as a blood count or CBC test. If this test shows an increase in white blood cells in the patient’s blood, then it should be assumed that the pain is due to a fever.
If the ESR increases, then it should be understood that there is some kind of infection inside the head. Apart from the blood test, X-rays and ultrasounds are done. If a tumor is detected anywhere in the body, then it must be assumed that the tumor is also inside the head. Because in most cases, if a tumor is detected in the body, there is a strong possibility of one or more secondary tumours in the head.
A common symptom of a brain tumour is headache. If nothing is detected in the routine test, imaging tests like CT scans, MRIs, and fundoscopies (eye examinations) are done.
If any problem is detected after examination, treatment is taken accordingly. A brain tumour, rupture of a blood vessel in the brain, inflammation of the meninges, or inflammation of the brain usually sends the patient to the hospital for treatment.
This treatment has two types. Non-operative and operative treatment. It is decided whether to operate or not after understanding the patient’s condition. For example, meninges, inflammation, or meningitis may or may not require surgery.
Brain tumours are treated like any other umor. For example, for brain tumours, drugs can be given to reduce the pressure on the brain. Radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be given if needed. Severe cases may require surgery. However, brain tumour surgery is not completely successful. Debulking or shrinking the tumor can remove it. Coiling, or thrombolysis, is done in cases of stroke.
At this time of the Corona epidemic, any patient with a red flag sign is treated in the hospital without a Corona test first. But for the safety of the doctors and nurses before the operation, the test is done.
It was also learned in the discussion that advanced treatment for all types of neurodegenerative diseases is being provided by skilled doctors at the National Institute of Neuroscience and Hospital in Bangladesh.
This hospital has a 100-bed specialised stroke unit. Complex operations and interventions for various brain problems are done here at a low cost.
Dr. at the end of the program. Abu Naim answered various questions from the audience about headaches.
