Any adult who is physically and mentally healthy can donate blood. 450 millilitres of blood are usually taken during blood donation. This amount of blood components is replenished within three months. So a healthy person can donate blood many times in life.
Blood donation capacity is determined according to the Bangladesh Government Gazette. Each blood donation center has a specific form to verify blood donation capacity, which is filled out by the blood donor himself. Then some tests are done to determine the suitability of blood donation.
Those who cannot donate blood
- Age below 18 years or above 60 years
- If the weight is less than 50 kg,
- You cannot donate blood if you are not physically healthy. For example, blood cannot be given if you have a cold, cough, sore throat, flu, or any other disease while donating blood.
- Blood cannot be given within 24 hours of dental treatment.
- If the hemoglobin level is below 12 g/dL,
- If the pulse rate is outside 60 to 100 beats per minute or if the heartbeat is irregular
- Blood pressure: 50 to 100 mmHg diastolic and 100 to 180 mmHg systolic—if outside these limits
- If the body temperature is above 37.5 degrees,
- If you have heart disease, cancer, kidney disease, asthma or respiratory problems, TB, or allergies
- If you have epilepsy, fits, or any mental disorder,
- People with diabetes or thyroid problems cannot donate blood.
- Abstain from donating blood for three months if traveling to a malaria-endemic zone (Chittagong Hill Tracts).
- Blood should not be given within one month of receiving any vaccination.
- Within six months of receiving a rabies or hepatitis B vaccination
- Blood should not be given during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Apart from this, it is better not to give blood even within six months of an abortion.
