Headache Involving the Head

It is difficult to find a person who has not suffered from headaches at some point in their life. Some headaches are easy to get rid of, while some pain can bring us danger. So we should all be careful about headaches.

Migraine and Headache Awareness Week is underway. On this occasion, we will learn about different types of headaches and their remedies during the week-long program ‘Matha ni Mathabyatha’ dedicated to SKF. The first episode of the program was broadcast live on September 6 simultaneously from Prothom Alo’s Facebook page, YouTube channel, and SKF’s Facebook page. The topic was ‘Headache due to stroke and cerebrovascular disease’. The guest of this episode was National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital Associate Professor Dr. Shirazi Shafiqul Islam. Conducted by Dr. Shravanya Tawhida.

The first thing to know is the cause of the headache. Headaches can occur for many reasons. If there is a problem with the scalp, flesh, bones, brain membranes or meninges, blood vessels in the brain, or even the fluid inside the head—the CSF or cerebrospinal fluid—then headaches can occur.

Apart from this, the way of life can also sometimes cause headaches. For example, the use of computers and smartphones has increased due to Corona.

Many people lie down and use laptops. Again, the desktop position of many people is not correct. Continuous use of the computer causes stress on the neck, eyes, and brain. This can cause headaches.

Now, small children are taking classes on smartphones and also playing games. Staring at the phone or reading small texts stimulates the brain. This is also one of the causes of headaches. Many have sinus problems. If they stay inside the AC for a long time or sweat in the heat and directly enter the AC room without wiping the sweat or taking a shower or drinking cold water, then they may get a headache. The muscles of the head become tense due to severe stress.

So many people get headaches due to work pressure or stress. Both the eyes and neck are related to the head. For any reason, pain in the eyes or neck can lead to headaches.

Among them, stroke causes headaches due to blood vessel problems. There are basically two types of stroke. One is a stroke due to blockage of a blood vessel, and the other is a stroke due to rupture of a blood vessel.

Normally, when a blood vessel ruptures, blood spills into the brain, causing severe pressure on the brain and the surrounding sensitive membranes, or meninges. The meninges then cause pain.

Again, when blood flow to the brain is blocked, the cells in that area are destroyed, and the area starts to swell. Swelling also puts pressure on the meninges, and pressure causes pain. Sometimes the blood vessel in the brain swells like a balloon. A brain aneurysm occurs when a blood vessel in the brain swells like a balloon. It can also cause headaches.

Patients usually undergo coil embolization if it is detected by an MRI or MRA. An AVM (arteriovenous malformation) or blockage in a blood vessel causes increased blood flow to the brain. This causes headaches. Doctors usually do endovascular treatment for such problems. So, if you have a severe headache, you must go to the doctor.

In addition to a severe headache, if the pain is accompanied by eye pain, vomiting, convulsions, paralysis of limbs or any part of the body, or if someone faints due to severe pain, then a doctor must be consulted urgently.

And with some pain, we can heal ourselves. We can heal ourselves without the need for any medicine. For that, we have to change our way of life. For example, use a smartphone or computer while resting. Rest easily relieves headaches. Also, neck exercises should be done for five minutes every half an hour during work. Avoid using a laptop while lying down under any circumstances.

Adjust the desktop position according to your height. Consult an occupational therapist for this purpose. Sometimes, physiotherapy can help relieve headaches.

Dr. at the end of the program. Shirazi Shafiqul Islam answered the audience’s headache-related questions.
