If you have thyroid problems, should you eat cauliflower?

Many people think that if you have thyroid problems or goiter, you should not eat cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, etc. vegetables. Are there any vegetable or food restrictions for thyroid problems? Let’s learn about some of the misconceptions about this:

If you have thyroid disease, you should not eat cauliflower.

Cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, etc. are vegetables of the cruciferous family. These vegetables contain certain substances, which slightly inhibit the thyroid gland from using iodine. But the amount of cruciferous vegetables needed to actually disrupt thyroid function is never possible for anyone. It means that the amount of these vegetables we eat in daily life is absolutely safe. Instead, broccoli is an excellent source of folic acid, and cauliflower and cabbage are rich in flavonoids, antioxidants, and vitamins. By not eating these vegetables this winter, you will be missing out on these benefits. Therefore, excluding these vegetables from the diet solely based on the presence of a thyroid problem is a misconception.

“Iodine should be consumed to reduce thyroid problems.”

Because iodine has an intricate relationship with thyroid gland function, this does not mean that all thyroid diseases are due to iodine deficiency. Rather, in most cases, thyroid disease is an autoimmune problem, meaning a complication of our immune system. In rare cases, it is caused by iodine deficiency, especially nowadays where many foods are iodized, starting with table salt. Many people also take iodine supplement pills to reduce thyroid problems. In fact, these have no role.

‘If you have hypothyroidism, you will be fat’

One of the symptoms of hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland, is weight gain. That doesn’t mean you can never lose weight if you are hypothyroid. With a proper diet, calorie reduction, and regular exercise, you can maintain a healthy and ideal weight even with hypothyroidism.
