Regular Health Checkup of Diabetic Patients

Diabetic patients should be tested every three months.

Blood sugar test (HbA1C test)

This test measures the average amount of sugar in your blood. This way, you can determine how close your sugar level is to the normal range.

Patients newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should undergo this test every 3 months. If your diabetes is under control, you can have this test done every 6 months.

Tests that should be done once a year for a diabetic patient

1. Foot condition

Diabetes can cause paralysis in any part of the foot by reducing the blood supply to your feet. If there is any injury or wound on the leg, it needs a lot of speed to recover. These wounds or sores may not heal properly, and if any part of the leg is injured or paralyzed, it can be difficult to understand. This can lead to problems like foot ulcers or infections.

So you have to be aware of whether you are getting proper sensation in your two feet, i.e., whether you are able to feel touch, pain, cold, hot, etc. You should regularly check if any part of your leg is paralyzed. It is also important to take care of any kind of wound, ulcer, or infection on the feet.

If you have any cuts, sores, or bruises on your leg, or if your leg feels numb, seek medical advice immediately.

2. The eyes

Diabetes can damage the blood vessels in the eye, leading to vision problems (diabetic retinopathy) and even blindness.

Regular eye exams can catch your eye problems before they affect your vision. Vision problems can be prevented if eye and blood vessel problems are treated promptly. Therefore, it is recommended to undergo an annual eye exam to assess the condition of the blood vessels in your eyes.

If you see blurred vision, go to the doctor immediately.

3. Blood pressure, cholesterol, and kidney

Diabetes increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney problems. However, these diseases nestle in your body silently, usually without showing any symptoms until they become serious. Therefore, these problems often go undetected until testing is conducted.

That is why it is recommended to get checked every year if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, or kidney problems. By getting checked every year, you can reduce the complications of these diseases by starting treatment quickly.
