Type 2 Diabetes

What is type 2 diabetes?

The disease we commonly understand as diabetes is actually ‘type 2’ diabetes. It is a well-known disease that causes high blood sugar levels. Symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, and excessive fatigue may occur when affected by this disease. But just because you have symptoms of type 2 diabetes makes you feel sick—that’s not the case. Apart from this, there are other symptoms of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can also increase your risk of serious eye, heart, and nerve (nerve) diseases. To reduce the risk of these diseases, it is important to control diabetes. This may require you to change your diet, take regular medications, and undergo regular health check-ups.

What causes type 2 diabetes?

The hormone called ‘insulin’ in the body causes Type 2 diabetes. Insulin controls the amount of glucose or sugar in your blood. This hormone is produced by a gland called the pancreas, located behind the stomach. This hormone, produced by a gland called Pancreas located behind the stomach, takes sugar from the blood into cells and breaks it down to produce energy when food is digested and enters your blood.

In type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin, or if it does, the body’s cells are not sensitive to it. Therefore, your body cannot break down sugar to produce energy in this way.

Type 2 diabetes is often associated with the following:

  • Overweight,
  • Lack of physical activity,
  • Having a family member such as a father, mother, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes

Many people suffer from type 2 diabetes without knowing it. Doctors often diagnose diabetes when they perform a blood or urine test for a different disease or problem.
